Chocolate Tour in Barcelona

The chocoholic that I am didn’t care about chocolate’s history until I’ve been to Barcelona. Which countries come to your mind when you hear of chocolates? I would think of Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy. They may all be part of Europe, but apparently Barcelona is the first European city in which chocolate was introduced. And the first chocolate making machine was inaugurated in Barcelona in 1780.

Let us begin the sweet journey. Enjoy reading!

Pasteleria Escribà

Our guide Carla would tell us some historical information as we walked around visiting one chocolate shop to another.

Dating back in 1902, Pasteleria Escriba is famed for creating edible masterpieces.

Torrons Artesans Vicens

From La Rambla, we strolled to the Gothic Quarter where we had most of the chocolate experience. Located in the well known chocolate street in Barcelona, Petritxol, is Torrons Artesans Vicens.

Xurreria, La Granja 1872

One of the food that must be eaten when visiting Spain is churros con chocolate. Carla got us crispy churros from the ‘best churros in Gothic Quarter’, Xurreria, and enjoyed them with warm, thick chocolate as we sat next door in La Granja.

Be Chocolat by Michel Clement

At this point, my taste buds are overwhelmed. So much so that when we were showed a lot of varieties of chocolates in Be Chocolat, I could only satisfy my eyes.

Caelum

But wait. There’s more!

Caelum is unique because all their dessert selections are baked by nuns from convents and monasteries around Spain.

Fargas

One of the oldest chocolate shops in Barcelona is Fargas.

Pastisseria Santa Clara

The simple and I think most affordable of them is Pastisseria Santa Clara. Yet the shop also makes one of the best desserts in Barcelona.

La Colmena

Among the displays of La Colmena, the meringues caught our eyes as we didn’t see them from the previous pastry shops.

Bubó

Carla saved the best for last. From the Gothic Quarter, we walked to El Born and relaxed in Bubo while having cake, coffee and more chocolates.

My son loved the chocolates I brought home.

It was a fun and sweets filled morning. I hope you liked this blog post.
