Most travelers begin in New York when going to the east coast of United States. This city that never sleeps is vibrant and full of energy. It is truly an “urban wanderer’s delight”. As much as you want to stay long in this bustling city, you might think twice as hotel and food are not as cheap as you think. So if you are planning about making New York your next travel destination and wondering what nearby places to visit, kindly scroll down and enjoy reading.
During my first time in the Big Apple, we had a day trip in Washington DC followed by a late night trip to Atlantic City. Yes, it was that quick. I promised if I come back I will take it slow and easy to make my travel worthwhile. Having fulfilled that promise, I will share to you our mini road trip.
Route
- New York: (4 days) New York Winter Travel Guide
- Philadelphia: (2 days) How to Spend 2 Days in Philadelphia
Philadelphia is 95 miles (156 km) southwest of New York City. Travel time is 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic and stop/s.
- Washington DC: (3 days) Washington DC 3-Day Itinerary
Washington DC is 136 miles (224 km) apart from Philly. Travel time is 2-3 hours depending on traffic and stop/s.
- Atlantic City: 2 days
We received a tip from my husband’s colleague that shopping in Delaware is tax-free. You read it right! Giddy as we were, we stopped by Christiana Mall on our way from Washington DC to Atlantic City. There were many options like JC Penny, Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom and more. However, if you are looking for up to date goods or designs I suggest you may skip this. Except for Sephora items that I bought for myself, I was not happy with the displays I saw. (Fyi I did not check everything.)
Atlantic City is 191 miles (307 km) apart from DC. Travel time is 3-3.5 hours depending on traffic and stop/s.
It is known as the Las Vegas of the east coast and was pretty awesome 7 years ago. I was shocked as it was like a ghost town during this trip. Take note though that it was the 24th of December, so it might be the reason (or is it). The best thing that we did was shopping at Tanger Outlets The Walk. The New Jersey State sales tax rate is 6.8%. Unlike many states, New Jersey does not impose local sales tax. Together with the Christmas deals, you can imagine that we splurged on this.
Tip: You may consider visiting other New Jersey City
If you are wondering why we took this route, from New Jersey we went back to New York to meet my sister and niece and left for Toronto.
Driver’s License
My husband secured an international driver’s license in our country which cost him PHP 3,500 (USD 68). But apparently, Philippine driver’s license was enough. It can be used in the United States not longer than 30 days.
Driving
United States of America uses left-hand drive cars like the Philippines.

Pros
Traveling a group of 7 (2 seniors, 2 adults, 3 teens) with huge luggage (specially mine) was convenient. There was no time pressure and I loved it. We could stop over anytime. In fact, I had a quick lunch date with my friend in Maryland on our way to Washington DC.
Cons
We did not use the car within Philly and DC as parking could be difficult and expensive.
Good alternative
If you’re traveling alone or as couple, a good alternative is by train (Amtrak). NYC to Philadelphia takes 1-1.5 hour, Philly to Washington DC 1 hour and DC to Atlantic City 4 hours.
So what do you think? Do not just go on a day trip. Stay a bit longer to really enjoy these wonderful cities.
With love,
Sugar
